Holiday Pet Shopping Guide

With the holiday season right around the corner and shopping season in full swing, we know that your pet is high priority on your shopping list.

Our Lifeline team wants to remind you of some things to avoid while you are shopping this year, to avoid a trip to visit us or our friends at the local emergency clinics.

ANTLERS

It’s hunting season! Whether you are getting them right from the source or the pet store, there is something you should know about giving our four legged friends antlers.

I know most people will tell you they've been giving their dogs antlers for years, but did you know they are one of the most common ways dogs fracture their teeth? Try giving a frozen beef or pork trachea stuffed with treats! This will keep them busy for a while, licking is mentally stimulating to dogs and tires them out!

RAWHIDES

Do your research on rawhides to avoid ones that have a lot of chemicals.

Rawhide toys can also cause intestinal obstructions due to being not very digestable

If you choose to buy a rawhide toy for your pet, be sure to monitor them while they are enjoying it to avoid breaking off small pieces

TOYS WITH STRINGS

Especially for our kitty friends, these types of toys are a big hit, but did you know they can intestinal issues if ingested and unable to pass them.

FLEXI/RETRACTABLE LEASHES

If you are getting a new leash this year, walk past the retractable leashes and look for something solid and the proper size. Flexi/Retractable leashes can be difficult to use and cause your pet and you injuries if not properly sized for your pet

Want to give your dog more room to roam while on their walk? Giving them more room to roam safely is always something dog parents are always on the lookout for. But you can not safely monitor your pet if they are 30 feet away trying to say hi to another dog. Remember, just because your dog is friendly, does not mean the other dog is! Try using a 12 ft long line!

Every pet is different and has different styles of play and chewing. Be sure to monitor how your pet plays and buy their enrichment accordingly.

Although we hope you have fun and incident free holiday, we are here for your pet if they need!
